How to Recycle Used Furniture

Recycling used furniture and used office furniture is something you can and should do.  Many people simply toss old furniture and never think about recycling it.  There are ways to let that used furniture get more use and by recycling it you will be doing a very good thing.

Why Recycling is Good

When you throw out your used furniture, all you are doing is adding to the amount of garbage piling up in landfills.  As the landfills becoming overflowing, new landfills have to be built.  This means more land is wasted and more areas become prone to the health hazards that come from landfills.

Recycling your used furniture is also good because it can be used instead of new furniture.  The production of a new piece of furniture requires more material use and pollution.  By reusing or recycling used furniture people will save forests and other endangered areas that are mowed down to get the materials to make these items.

How to Recycle

Recycling used furniture can be done in a few ways.

  • You can recycle the whole piece.  If the furniture is in fairly good shape and still useable you can donate it to a thrift shop where it will be cleaned up and sold.  This allows the charitable organization to make money that goes to help low income persons and event he community in many different ways.
  • You can get it fixed up and sell it yourself.  If there are some minor issues with the furniture then you should be able to do some minor repairs and make it good as new.  You can then sell it for a small amount.
  • You can break it down yourself.  If the furniture is beyond repair then you can break it down and recycle the materials.  This is a little work, but you may be able to build something or even get some money for the parts.

Recycling used furniture of any kind is a good idea because furniture is usually awkward and bulky.  Not to mention that if you dispose of it through your regular waste removal then you will likely be charged a fee for doing so.  There are many benefits to recycling and it really does not take a lot of effort to do it, so the next time you need to dispose of used furniture, try recycling instead of just dumping it in the garbage.
