How to Recycle Used Computers and Other Electronics

Recycling used computers, gamed equipment and other used electronically items is banned in many areas because of the toxic materials they contain.  The solution is to recycle these items.  You can recycle everything from an old used laptop to a used Xbox.  It is important to understand how to get rid of old electronics, so they do not end up just sitting around and collecting dust in your house.

The Difference

Most of the time when you think about recycling you think about the product heading on a short journey to be recycled back into whatever it was before.  This is usually the case, but with electronics there is a difference.

When electronics are recycled they have to be separated.  All the different materials - the plastic, metal and electronic components - are separated and each is recycled in its own way. Additionally, many of the materials in electronical equipment is very useful.  For example, there is lead, copper and gold, which is very valuable and can be used once it is separated out from the equipment.

Why Recycle Electronics

Electronics are made of some materials which will simply sit forever in a landfill with minimal, if any at all, break down.  In other words, used computers, a used Xbox and other elctronical equipment is not very biodegradable.  The majority of metals found in landfills today in the United States are from electronical equipment.

Recycling is the idea of keeping the landfills maintained.  Without putting all the waste in the landfill that can be recycled, we can stop overflow and having to build new ones.  Plus we gather up useable materials that would otherwise have to be mined from the earth.

How to Recycle your Used Computers or other Electronic Equipment

If you want to recycle your old electronic equipment then you need contact your local recycling center.  They should either be able to take the equipment or direct you where to go.  Many times smaller electronics, like cell phones, can be recycled at various drop off points and even some businesses will collect them.

It is important to realize that tossing old electronics in the trash is not a good idea.  You are much better to recycle them and help the planet, not to mention your fellow man.  It may take some work, but it is probably not something you do often, so the hassle is well worth knowing you are not breaking the law or harming the earth by contributing to landfill waste.
