How to Recycle Paper

Paper recycling is one of the most common items recycled.  Paper is a large part of waste and it is easily recycled.  Most paper is recycled not because it is bad for the landfills or because it takes forever to break down, because it is neither, but to help conserve trees.  To make paper millions of trees are cut down and that is stripping the environment of much needed woodlands.

The good thing is that paper is something you can recycle yourself at home.  You can use old paper to make new paper.  It is fun and easy.  It is a great craft project for kids, too.  You will enjoy the many new styles of paper you can create.  It can be fun to see just how unique you can make your own paper creations.

Supplies:

  • Used paper
  • Water
  • Blender
  • Screen

Making your own paper is pretty simple.  Here are the steps to follow:

Step One:  Tear up the used paper into strips or smaller bits that will be easy to break down.  A quick and easy method is to run it through a shredder if you have one.  Make sure that any staples or paper clips are removed fort he paper before the next step.

Step Two:  Put the torn up paper in the blender and add in some water.  You can start with enough water to moisten al the paper in the blender.

Step Three:  start to blend the paper to help break it down.  You may need to add more water.  The end result should be a nice thick paste-like pulp.  You will want to repeat steps two and three until all your paper is pulp.

Step Four:  Place you screen on some newspaper to catch the draining water.  You then need to start spreading the pulp out on the screen.  Make sure that you do not spread it too thick or too thin.  You may also want to shape it as best as possible to the desired paper shape.

Step Five:  Allow the paper to dry completely.  This can take some time, which will vary depending on the conditions in your home.

Step Six:  Once the paper is dry remove it from the screen and cut to the desired shape.

You can now use your new paper.

You may want to experiment with different colors, shapes and sizes of paper.  Your homemade paper is perfect to use a stationary or for school projects.
