Earth Day
Earth Day is a day where the people participate to protect the environment. It started on April 22 1970 by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin. He started this campaign with a group of environmentalists while they are still in University.
Amazingly, about 20 million people participated on the very first Earth Day, which led to the yearly celerbration (or remembrance) of the Earth Day.
5 months before the inception of the Earth Day, peace activist John McConnell founded the Equinox Earth Day. Some said that Mr. Gaylord mimic the idea from John but it really doesn't matter. What is important is that the people are made aware of the need to protect the Earth, our only home.
Equinox Earth Day is usually on 20 March every year. It is also interesting to note that there is other movement called the Earth Hour, where the world will switch off their lights from 8.30 to 9.30pm at their own local timing on 28 March 2009.
It was estimated that over 80 countries, 4,000 cities participated in the Earth Hour, resulting in a huge savings of 70 mega watts. 70 mega watts represent a saving of 30 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
Other environmental dates include:
World Environment Day - Every year on the week of 5 June
Ozone Action Day - Held locally in various municipalities
World Population Day - Every year on 11 July
Car Free Day - Every year on 22 September
World Water Day - Every year on 22 March
